Getting Organised with Google Calendar

September 21st, 2009 | View Comments | Posted in Life, Technology

Google has an amazing set of free tools available for anyone with internet access. One app I’ve been using for years which I don’t see used enough among my peers is Google Calendar. With the wealth of free tools available in this day and age, there is little reason to be disorganised. Let me give a quick low down to those who’ve not yet realised the potential benefits of an online calendar.

Sharing is Social (and sexy)

Team work is absolutely necessary no matter which industry you’re in. If you’re a student, you probably do group assignments. Online calendars can be set up and shared with family, friends, co-workers and of course group members. When all members create a calendar and share them with each other, the result is a colourful bliss of events displayed with gaps between free times. Anyone can then schedule an event, invite the potential attendees and away it goes. Did I mention it’s live?

Multiple Calendars

On your journey to an organised life, you’ll probably find one calendar just doesn’t cut it. You need one for the family, one for your friends, one for work and probably another for yourself. No problem, all that secret agent by night stuff belongs in a private calendar and you can create as many as you like.

Public Calendars

Does your company or club hold public social events? All it takes is to create a public calendar and instantaneously the world has access to your events, free! If that’s not your thing, you can also add calendars of public holidays, weather and even pre-populated sport event calendars! Still not you thing? Then you’re probably interested in the moon phases.. yeh, that’s there too.

Integration with Gmail

Google Calendar works seamlessly with Gmail. Event invitations sent to @gmail or @googlemail accounts are able to reply without leaving the browser.

Google Calendar

Multi-language Support

So what if grandma doesn’t understand English? Available in over 40 languages, even my grandparents can organise their day from 6am morning exercises to 1am mah-jong sessions; it’s brilliant! Now when I’m back overseas, I finally know when to wake up for breakfast! I love my grandparents =)

Clean and Intuitive Interface

Like most Google products, the interface is clean and minimalist. Without going into religious debates about usability, I think the interface is intuitive. If you use Gmail already, you’ll feel right at home.

Searchable Events

Yes, you can Google search your life.

It’s all in the Cloud

Anywhere, at almost anytime, you have access to an online calendar through your phone, a wifi hotspot or internet kiosk. Google calendar events can be synced on iPhone and an array of other devices, see if yours is supported!

So what are you waiting for? Don’t procrastinate a second longer, get your life organised now!
