Low budget DIY water cooling for your laptop.

August 5th, 2009 | View Comments | Posted in Technology

Setting up water cooling for your laptop has never been easier or more cost effective. A few months ago, I started using my laptop for 3D modelling and video editing to help a friend out with a Uni assignment. Frustratingly, the computer kept shutting down due to heat. So what did I do in my frustration? I got creative and my computer didn’t shut down once.

Here’s how: Acquire two tofu boxes, the ones you can buy from asian groceries ($1.40 each). Cook and eat or empty out the tofu, and wash the boxes. Fill them with cold water (tap water works just fine). Finally, place the boxes under your laptop and you’ve got a DIY water cooling system.

Now before you go off and criticise the effectiveness of this, you’ve got to actually try it to notice the effectiveness. It might seem unreal, but it works. The only requirement is that you have a flat surface. Glue/Tape the lids on tightly if you want to use this on an incline; but unless you have some serious ergonomic needs I don’t know why you would. I’m well aware of more permanent cooling systems for laptops, but I can assure you this is the cheapest DIY solution out there. Let me know if you come up with an equally effective method.

And hey, it’s compatible with both Mac and Pc, what more can you ask for?
